Emotions
60 x 48 inches, Mesh on Fabric, Commissioned for Oprah Winfrey
This work explores the paradox of strength and softness: two forces often seen as opposites, yet fundamentally dependent on one another. Inspired by Oprah Winfrey’s quiet power and grace, this private commission embodies the harmony between resilience and vulnerability. Each layer of mesh, fragile and transparent on its own, builds upon the next to form a portrait of depth and presence. The accumulation of delicate materials becomes a metaphor for inner strength that is constructed patiently with purpose, layer by layer. Through its material and subject, “Emotions” reminds us that true power isn’t loud; it emerges quietly, from within.
We often think of strength as hard and softness as fragile, but they’re not so different.
This piece began with that idea, the balance between the two. To many, Oprah embodies that balance, and I was tasked with bringing that duality to life. Her presence carries power that doesn’t need to be loud, and I wanted this work to reflect that energy.
Each layer of mesh builds the portrait. On its own, the fabric is thin, transparent, almost weightless — but together, the layers form something whole, strong, and captivating.
This is a reminder that real strength isn’t forced — it’s built quietly, through the layers in between.
